How to apply to Graduate School at LSU

This section will give you an idea of the process of applying to graduate school at LSU. We provide some steps most of the UNAG alumni pursuing a graduate degree at LSU have done so far.  A downloadable version of the document is provided below for your assistance.

It is recommended to contact UNAs at LSU for additional help or feedback during any step of this process.

Steps

Requirements

First, have a look at the LSU International Admission Requirements (be aware of the deadlines for each semester):

 https://lsu.edu/graduateschool/admissions/requirements-deadlines.php

You need to know what degree interests you, the link below shows the master’s and Ph. D’s degrees available at LSU:  https://www.lsu.edu/agriculture/programs/graduate/index.php

Then, you can see the requirements that you need to complete to apply to the program you want.

Start collecting and working on the required documents.

Some of this include: Personal Statement and Curriculum Vitae.

Search for a Professor

It is recommended to research the faculty/department of your interest because you will need for an advisor during your program and who will cover your full assistantship.

Search for two or three different professors that work in something you're interested in. Once you have chosen the professor, you need to contact him/her, the best way to do it is writing an email. For tips about writing emails to professors, check: How to Write a Professional Email

Fill out application

You can start your application at the link below:

https://lsu.edu/graduateschool/admissions/apply.php

You will need to create a new account, with your email and a password by clicking on First-Time Users: “Create an account to start a new application”. Always remember your account! And start filling out all the required information, it is not necessary to finish the application that same day.

When you already have the application account you can go to the same link, but this time click on Retuning users: Log in, and write the username that you have created before.

Submitting your application

When you submit your application, you will receive an email with a link, where you will see a list with all the documents that you still need to submit.

To see your application status use the following link:

Over the course of the days, you will see that your status will change when your department is reviewing your application. This will take less than a month.

Visa Process

Once you are accepted, you need to contact your professor. You will receive an offer letter from your department, which you must sign and send back. You will receive an email from International Services requesting for some information and a couple days later you will receive an email with your I-20 Form.

When you receive the form, you must pay the SEVIS I-901 Fee at the following link:
